To read in 2023

  1. Achieving our Country I haven’t yet read anything by Richard Rorty, and I think it’s about time. I feel like the anti-communist-left is a space that either evaporated entirely or doesn’t advertise itself effectively, and I’m curious to read more about it.
  2. Finite and Infinite Games I skimmed part of this book a couple of years ago and think it’s probably time to give it a more thorough reading, with some accessory reviews to see why other people seem so fond of it.
  3. For the Love of Mike I live in Chicago now, and Studs Terkel and Mike Royko were large voices in the city for a long time.
  4. Homelessness is a Housing Problem I think this book will probably be a consolidation of stats that I’ve already seen, but I’m holding out hope that there will be some further historical analysis or global contex that will be new to me.
  5. Legal Systems Very Different from Ours The more familiar I have become with the Common Law system, the more it seems like it could really use an update. This book seems like a great survey of lesser known alternatives.
  6. Making Mondragon I’m hoping to get a better idea of why Mondragon has been so successful compared to other co-ops.
  7. Rationalism, Pluralism, and Freedom I’ve like JT Levy’s shorter writings for a while, and it’s time I read his big book.
  8. Systems of Survival A re-read. I really want to try to find someone to read this book with. I feel like the dialogue structure of the book lends itself well to prompting discussion.
  9. The Human Use of Human Beings Beep Boop.
  10. The Quest for Community A critique of individualism and it’s abuses. I think this one will be interesting to pair with RPF.
  11. Think Bayes Last year I finally saw an explanation of what a random variable was and I’m so angry that no one ever told me that I’m relearning probability and stats.
  12. Why American’s Hate the Media I don’t think journalism is working well right now, though I’m not sure exactly why that is. I’m seeking out books in the space, if you have any suggestions.
